THE
Pegasus™ 7 Synchro IS AN ENHANCED PERSONAL MARKER FOR
COVERT OPERATIONS. Also known as the Phoenix Synchro-IR, the infrared (IR) marker is
typically used in Night Vision operations were detection is denied to those
without Night Vision devices (NVD).
Manufactured as a covert marker for personnel or equipment, it is the same
physical size and weight and constructed similar to the original Phoenix
units.
Pegasus™ 7 Synchro (NSN: 5855-01-540-1898) is a synchronized infrared signaling beacon developed specifically for high risk missions where rapid identification of marked assets is critical. The Pegasus 7 enhances other beacons flash pattern coding by providing the ability to synchronize several beacons so they flash in unison.
With several beacons deployed, synchronized flash patterns are recognized by operators and commanders in less than half the time as traditionally coded beacons. Faster squad recognition along with a dramatically reduced incidence of confusion with small arms fire extends this beacons capabilities well beyond that of traditional programmable beacons.
The Pegasus 7 Synchro has the capability to store two user-selectable flash patterns in memory. The first code pattern is a fixed flash rate code identical to the Phoenix Jr. (NSN: 5855-01-438-4588). The second code pattern is user programmed. The operator can easily switch between each of the encoded flash patterns or a standby mode via the beacons programming pins. The standby mode allows the beacon to put in a sleep setting where no flash pattern is broadcast allowing it to be switched from standby to ON without disconnecting the battery. The beacons non-volatile memory allows the battery to be removed from the beacon without erasing any of the entered codes.
COVERT SIGNALING IN COMBAT OPERATIONS sometimes requires the rapid selection of several different codes or signal sequences. The Pegasus™ 7 Synchro offers two factory preset channels and one user installed channel. The selection between the channels can be done rapidly, using only a coin to make the switch. Thus there is a channel for the Unit, the Team and an Individual identification can be rapidly selected by the operator.

Operating depth: The Poseidon — Phoenix /
Pegasus Mounting Clip (902801) provides a water tight casing for the beacon
and battery assembly. If immersed without the Poseidon case, the unit will
continue to operate until the contacts fail due to water and electrolytic
corrosion. Given these conditions the depth limitation is solely determined
by the battery’s ability to withstand depth.
Pegasus 7 Synchro-IR beacons are a series of infrared beacons that flash in unison to mark a specific line, landing zone and personnel (Combat ID). The beacons emit a covert signal that is visible at long ranges when viewed with Night Vision Devices. All Synchro-IR Beacons can either be a leader (to program other Synchro-IR Beacons) or a follower (to receive a program and synchronize to the leader). This capability allows all follower Synchro-IR Beacons to flash the exact pattern as the leader, and identify units precisely instead of random IR flashing.

Experience shows that Night Vision Goggle (NVG) equipped personnel have difficulty locating and tracking randomly flashing infrared (IR) beacons. Randomly flashing beacons may appear like one beacon which is jumping between several locations, causing confusion which may delay critical mission support, thus putting a ground team at risk.
The Pegasus 7 Synchro is a small, lightweight signaling device which offers IR synchronization of two or more beacons. Thus, ground forces can mark their positions with a series of covert IR beacons flashing in unison.
Large units may elect to use scores of beacons to mark the forward line of troops. A convoy marked by Pegasus 7 Synchro can be easily detected and identified by escort aircraft. Additionally, a lost or displaced company can be easily identified as a friendly force, simply by associating its perfectly sequenced code with a battalion. A group of synchronized beacons significantly improves situational awareness and aids three-dimensional perception.
Any unit will operate as either a leader or follower unit. Once a unit is programmed it is put in the proximity of the communication point of the next beacon and the program from the leader is transmitted to the follower. The follower beacon will validate the transmission with the leader unit and given this confirmation, the follower can also be used as a leader without any loss of synchronization between any of the units. Once synchronized the units will operate in synch without any inter-device communication.
The synchronization will stay within 30 milliseconds over a period of 72 hours between any of the devices, which is not discernable to the eye. This product is may also be used to act as a leader with a TACP Synchro. This allows a group of TACP beacons to put out the same synchronized signal, thus avoiding the cost of special programming devices.
The beacon has many uses in combat and other covert
operations for marking personnel, vehicles, safe pathways, or locations. It
incorporates a flash rate that was specified to prevent confusion with small
arms-fire. Use the Phoenix Jr. to identify friendly force positions,
demarcation lines or perimeters.
